the mirror

as i look into the mirror as a child
i mimic and mock with every smile
and then i concentrate on my eyes
to my surprise
im not alone
i can see you in my twin
the little girl that dwells within
im not alone
you guide me through my darkest years
your soft whispers in my ears
you protect me from my inadequacies and pain
but you introduce me to shame
im all alone
every decision from here on out
is mangled and twisted and shrouded in doubt
now i contemplate every action
and attempt to gauge every reaction
i no longer feel free
because you are me
