Generally, while under general anaesthesia, an incision is made around the nipple, running down vertically to the inframammary fold. Depending on the size of the breast, the incision may also run along the inframammary fold. Excess fat, skin, glandular tissue and any breast implants are removed, the nipple is repositioned higher and the incision is closed. The initial recovery period is generally only a few weeks, but full recovery can take up to a year. Surgical results are generally quite good.

In this section, we will cover various breast-related surgeries. Both breast augmentation and breast reduction will be discussed, as well as the various surgical methods.

Breast Augmentation

Saline Implants

Saline implants consist of a silicone elastomer shell, that is later filled with saline solution. They have the benefit of being able to be implanted with a smaller incision, resulting in less scarring.

Surgery

An incision is made at the inframammary fold and a pocket is made either between the chest muscle and breast tissue, or the ribcage and chest muscle. The implant is then inserted in to the pocket. The implant is filled and checked for size, position and symmetry. Once both are even, the incisions are then closed. Due to the implant being empty during implantation, a smaller incision is required than for silicon implants.

Silicon Implants

Silicon implants consist of an elastomer-coated shell filled with a semi-solid gel. Earlier generations of silicon implants had some issues with leakage, newer shell technology as well as the use of thicker fillers have reduced leakage

Surgery

An incision is made at the inframammary fold and a pocket is made either between the chest muscle and breast tissue, or the ribcage and chest muscle. The implant is then inserted in to the pocket. The implant is then checked for size, position and symmetry. Once both are even, the incisions are then closed. Due to the implant being full during implantation, a larger incision is required than for saline implants.

Breast Reduction

A reductive mammoplasty is a surgical procedure, done under general anaesthesia, that is intended to reduce the volume of the breast. It is also used to remove the breast completely, this is called a mastectomy.

Surgery

Generally, while under general anaesthesia, an incision is made around the nipple, running down vertically to the inframammary fold. Depending on the size of the breast, the incision may also run along the inframammary fold. Excess fat, skin, glandular tissue and any breast implants are removed, the nipple is repositioned higher and the incision is closed. The initial recovery period is generally only a few weeks, but full recovery can take up to a year. Surgical results are generally quite good.
