Despite great strides being made in many parts of the world, assault and murder of transgender people continue to occur at a rate above that in the general population. Transgender people are disproportionately the target of violence. Sites such as Remembering Our Dead memorialize those who were killed due to anti-transgender hate or prejudice. Transgender Europe's Trans Murder Monitoring Project attempts to keep track of murders of trans people around the world. The statistics they report show alarming numbers of transgender people being murdered around the world. These statistics indicate that violence is most likely to occur among sex workers.

In Invisible Lives: The Erasure of Transsexual and Transgendered People (amazon.com), Viviane K. Namaste found that 1 in 2 trans people had been the subject of violence in the past year, greatly exceeding the incidence among gays (1 in 7).

Other factors which increase the likelihood of violence include race and unemployment.
